Boy Meets Girl Fashion Show

State College, PA, where I attend Penn State, is known for football and State Patty’s day, but not for fashion. When I heard about Stacey Igel and the whole Boy Meets Girl team coming to my school, I knew I had to be there! I made it my mission to find the cutest outfit to strut down the red carpet Campus Candy, which was where the event took place. I ended up wearing a yellow tube top with a black bandage mini skirt, along with a long black sweater, BCBG sandals, and topped it off with a Vintage plum-colored Gucci shoulder bag. When I arrived I saw so many people , mainly girls with the same purpose as mine; everyone was dressed up head to toe. Majority of the girls wore gorgeous skirts and dresses, others wore a nice pair of skinny jeans, but everyone jazzed it up with a rocking pair of pumps. Guys were also in attendance, I spotted dress pants, slacks and cargos mainly styled with a buttoned up or a V-neck sweater or shirt. Everyone mingled and complimented on their college-ready wear fashion.

What I was excited most about was meeting Stacey, and seeing her fall collection. There are definitely some MUST HAVES! Her inspiration for the show was indeed candy. As the models walked in a circle, they showcased their college inspired outfits and at the same time, showing of wonderful treats that Campus Candy has to offer. When you walked in, you were kindly greeted by a member of the team. We all had an amazing experience feeling like a celebrity by walking the red carpet into the store and posing for the camera. We all knew it was a contest, so we all looked our best.

Some of the looks from the show included Boy Meets Girl tunics with a pair of black leggings, grey harem pants, with black graphic tees, a body conscious orange strapless dress that I absolutely adored. I also loved the graphic tee, with mini skirt, pearls knee-high socks. But my absolutely favorite of them all was the white “boy meets girl” tee with the “Every which way” mini skirt, long black sweater, grey socks and black pumps.

I would say that this collection was cute, and comfortable chic and sophisticated, all at the same time. The looks were each different and had their own unique message. The collection showed me visions of hanging out with your boyfriend, a night out with the girls, a glamorous fashion show or even for a football game. I would say Stacey Igel’s vision would have to be “from the concrete to the runway” meaning a collection where you can just be comfortable and home, yet glamorous at the same time. The pieces were for every style a girl can imagine.

I had an amazing time at the event and looks forward to more events from Stacey Igel in the future. Until then, I can’t wait to go shopping on BoyMeetsGirl.com

The History of the Fashion Show

Fashion week is a huge event in the fashion world today. It lasts about a week and it is basically an opportunity where designers get to display their latest collections in runway shows for all to see. It is a very exclusive event, full of models, bloggers, photographers and various celebrities. Fashion week is where new trends are discovered. All throughout the world fashion week is held, but more commonly are held in the four fashion capitals, New York, Milan, Paris, and London.

Over the summer, I had the opportunity to intern at Lucky magazine. I had such a wonderful experience. The best part of the internship was the fashion shows attended along with the other interns. It was an extremely hot summer day, a very crowded event where everyone was dressed head to toe, in dresses, cute skirts, shorts, skinny jeans, all showcasing the Express brand. As we were all in Times Square watching the new fall collection by Express going down the runway. I realized that so much work actually goes into putting a runway show together.

In “Land of Desire” William Leach writes that in 1903, a New York City specialty store called Ehrich Brothers hosted what was likely this country’s first fashion show, in an effort to lure middle-class female customers into the store. In 1914, Edna Woodman Chase, former editor of Vogue organized an event called “Fashion Fete” the benefit the war relief effort. By 1920, many department stores were holding shows of their own calling them “fashion parades”. They often had these shows during lunch or teatime.

In 1943, the first New York Fashion Week, then called Press Week was the world’s first fashion week ever. The event was designed to attract attention away from French fashion during World War II, especially since fashion industry insiders were unable to travel to Paris to see French fashion shows. It was a showcase for American designers aimed to impress fashion journalists.

In 1994, the event was moved to Bryant Park, held in large tents and admission by invitation only, to the fashion industry, fashion press, and celebrities. Fashion Week was held at Bryant Park until September 2010 when it was moved to Lincoln Center.

New York City, London, Milan, and Paris each host a fashion week twice a year with New York beginning each season and the other cities following in the aforementioned order.

There are two major seasons per year - Autumn/Winter and Spring/Summer. For womens wear, the Autumn/Winter shows always start in New York in February and end in Paris in March. Spring/Summer shows start in New York in September and end in Paris in October.

Today, fashion shows are world-renowed in today’s world. Each year more countries are hosting their own fashion Week, coming soon will be Cambodia’s Fashion Week at the end of October. Also Mpumalanga, and Nigeria’s Fashion in November.

Fashion Looks For Less !

Even though it is over, Mercedes-Benz Fashion Week is still all that’s on my mind.

There were so many concepts each designer brought out. One thing I gathered from my research of the shows would have to be the fall fashion trends. Some of the trends included waist-silhouettes, with blazers, coats and jackets. Polka dots was also a huge trend, camouflaged inspired prints, maxi skirts and sweaters, as seen on the runway as well as on celebrity stylist, June Ambrose. Old trends were also brought back like the slits in dresses, chocker necklaces, and “granny inspired” plaid.

Many college students are fashion conscious, but they can’t always afford couture. So I decided to take a look at affordable versions of runway looks for less.

Polka dots are so in this season, and if the fabulous Marc Jacobs and Diane von Furstenberg both put it on the runway, then you know it’s a trend. Now, if you’re not up for going full throttle polka dot head to toe, you can try it out as a top, or a mini dress. Urban Outfitters has a basic, spotted opened-back tunic, that can pair perfectly with skinny jeans or black leggings. At a reasonable price of ($39.99). Forever 21, has a vintage-inspired knee length polka dot skirt for a steal of ($22.80).

A maxi skirt and sweater combo reads both sophistication and comfort. Max Azria’s models walked the catwalk in clothes that the average college student on a budget can not afford. But Target’s maxi skirt, available in colors from black to yellow, ($15). Victoria’s Secret has a huge sale selection on their sweaters ranging ($40-$60), so shop ‘till you drop.

Sexy yet classy, lace has been in style since the 1940s and has been making a heavy comeback. This Fall, Arden B is showcasing their lace designs. If you are going out a night of fun, this sexy black lace dress ($70) will be your bestfriend. If sexy isn’t your thing you can go for a more classic look with their cream-colored scoop neckline dress ($70). The cinching at the waist, will give you the perfect figure.

Thank you Michael Kors for bringing one of my mother’s favorites back to life! The chocker necklace is beyond haute. Even though his prices aren’t too haute, ] Rita’s Treasure store has a vintage-styled black Onyx chocker ($60). Remember with a chocker, restraint is key, so not too much jewelry. Never overdo something stunning.

And hooray for Granny, “Granny inspired” plaid has turned heads. Tory Burch, and DKNY, showed us how to rock it during Fashion Week. Stella McCartney, sealed the deal with her plaid sweater. Tommy Hilfiger’s short sleeve plaid dress, is a very iconic-styled dress ($80) and can be layered with a long sleeve shirt, and tights and a black blazer.

One of the fall’s must-haves are red pants. Red as well as other bright pants are part of DKN’s Fall collection. One of my favorite websites ever, ASOS is the best when it comes to brightly colored pants, ranging from pink, to yellow, to red even purple. All colors you can imagine (from $60).

We all may not be able to afford the couture of Chanel or the high class of Hervé Léger, but we can put our on twist on what’s in style and still make it beautiful. So what are you waiting for? Go shopping for your looks, you’ll be sure to catch attention. Always remember “Glamour is contagious, share it with friends”
